CHICAGO, IL - A new case study released by BiOWiSH Technologies finds BiOWiSH™ Manure & Odor Treatment (Swine & Poultry) quickly and significantly reduces ammonia levels in poultry bedding.

BiOWiSH™ Manure & Odor Treatment (Swine & Poultry) was applied at four different contract broiler grower facilities in Arkansas earlier this year. Just seven days after the birds were placed, the study found the ammonia levels at all four barns were 0 ppm, from a starting point of up to 210 ppm. There were also significant reductions in how long ventilation fans were run each day, which presents growers an opportunity for energy cost savings.

Ammonia emissions from poultry litter can cause several problems, including poor poultry performance. One study found ammonia levels as low as 20 ppm compromised the immune system of chickens, increasing the likelihood of diseases and respiratory system problems¹. High ammonia levels can also cause problems with feed conversion and weight gain in the chicks. In addition to trouble with the birds, high ammonia levels can also cause problems for the health of agricultural workers and the environment.

The results from a University of Georgia study found electricity use accounted for about 29% of the greenhouse gas emissions on broiler grow-out farms. The study found lighting and ventilation are the two most common energy costs for poultry growers². Therefore, reducing electricity use, such as reducing how long ventilation fans are run, present growers a huge opportunity to reduce their carbon footprints.
